If you are fleixble about the shedding thing, labs match all of your other criteria. They shed like nobody's business, though you could probably shave them. Maybe a ridgeback might be good? I think the pit bull posts might be on target, I agree that you want to know the provenance of the dog if you go that way and an adult pit bull of unkown origin would be a risky choice for your household. A puppy could be fine though, they are sweet animals if no one has mistreated them along the way. A bull mastiff is another possibility.

Since you aren't too picky, I'd say stay away from a purebred anything. Too many health issues in the lines. A nice shelter dog would probably be perfect. You can go in, look around, find a dog that suits all of your needs. Plus, you will have time at the shelter to get to know the dog and be sure it is a good match. The dog you describe could be any breed. Big dogs are likely to have enough energy without going over the top, and if you have the yard space, you should totally go for it!

Well, a Greyhound could be a good dog for you. They are very active and playful, and love going on walks and runs. It dosen't shed as it dosen't have much fur. There is where the only problem lies, though, as it hates cold weather, but loves warm and to snuggle up with you in warm places. It is also a great alarm dog;it has very large lungs and could bark loudly if an intruder enters your house. It will go to parks, as it loves to be with other dogs as well.It is fragile, so you can't be very rough, but you can be rough. If you are okay with the fact it dosen't like cold weather, then i'm sure you would love this wonderful companion dog.

There are a lot of dogs that would love to have an owner like you. I personally think an American Pit Bull Terrier would fit perfect with you, but i know a lot of people don't want the extra responsibility that comes with people judging your dog. You can go to http://dogbreedinfo.com/ to look at a lot of different dog breeds that have pictures and descriptions. And they also have a breed quiz that can help you chose the best kind of dog.
You can also go to your local animal shelters and see the dogs they have available. The people who volunteer work with the dogs every day and they can help you out by telling you about their personality. Good Luck finding your new pet!! He will be a lucky dog!

I might be biased, but I say Doberman Pinscher. I was raised with 3 of them. After owning a Golden Retriever for 15 years, my parents bought another Doberman last year - she turns 1 this month.
They actually have a wonderful temperment, they're easy to train, they're excellent guard dogs, they love being active, and they have minimal shedding.
The trick, and this is true with most dogs, is to socialize them with people and other dogs very early on. Once she was done with all her puppy shots, my parents took her to the dog park on a regular basis. She was scared of the other dogs at first, but now she absolutely loves going. She has ZERO dog aggression and loves kids (since there's usually kids at the dog park).

i say you should get a rottwiller- they dont shed that much, very good guard dog, if you dont play tug war with it, it will be a good dog with children, they are very active and love to go on walks, and love being outside especially in the snow- i would get a female though- males are agressive but not females!

get a pitbull or half lab half pitbull mix. if you are going to have a dog around children, get a puppy; you never know how an adult dog was raised and how it will react around children. with a puppy you can train it yourself and it will learn what it can and cant do faster.
