If it is a vacuum leak can it lead to other problems? I need to go out of town in a week and it will be an 8 hour drive. I don't have time to get this fixed before I leave. Will this cause any major damage to my engine or will it be safe to go? I need to go on this trip but I don't want to break down on the way.

Well, technicaly it could cause a lean condition in one or more cylinders. That would create a higher combustion temperature in those cylinders.

Higher than normal temperatures in a cylinder could, in fact burn a piston. Especialy durring a long trip.

Isn't there some way you could "band-aid"it?

You may be just fine. Or, you may not. It's hard to say.

Won't cause any more problems, but if it is a vacuum leak the car will run rough or poorly, may even be hard to start. For a 8 hr. drive you will wish you had time to get it fixed or will stop somewhere along the way and get it fixed.

It will cause your engine to idle rough, lose some power, and use more gas... I would get it fixed.
