NO one wants to ruin their own health. They simply are CHOOSING to live a certain way for one personal reason or another and we can give them our input and the facts as we know them and then we need to back off and realize that ultimately they will make their own CHOICE. I am sure you've heard before that you cannot change someone that does not want to be changed.
If this person is an addict it is not so simple as making the choice to change whatever it is they need to change to go in that direction away from the death or hospital path.
I could go on and on.They laugh at is as a defense mechanism;this too i could go on and on.

In order for someone to gain common sense that you wish, you'd have to play Psychologist and figure out why they do it and how to stop it.
Masochistic people have many reasons to cut themselves, and if your able to identify the reason you can make them stop or give them another way to release themselves.
Ex: I used to be Masochistic. When I felt highly mad, I would go to the bathroom and grab anything sharp and cut myself plenty of times. What do I do now? I usually listen to music or scream in a pillow or just. . . Lob something across somewhere.
Now, if it's a fetisch. . . There is no hope.

The only real thing that you can do is be there for them. You can try to show them what they are doing to themselves and show them how it is hurting them or potentially going to hurt them, BUT the only way that they will see it as such is when they are ready to admit that there is a problem. This step of them admitting is one of the hardest things for them to do, I've been there and I've heard stories. You definitely don't want to give up on them, but you have to realize that no one can get better until they want something for themselves.

There is nothing you can do for anyone but yourself. Love, acceptance, and understanding are the only things you can do for this person. If you try to tell them what to do they'll deny it and will resent you.

if they're related to me or very close to me, no matter how much they hate it, i will do something like this:
-if they had a cigarette in their mouth, i will take it out, throw on the floor, and smoosh it with my shoe
-if they are drinking, i will snatch that drink away from them and dump it
and if i catch them doin it over and over again, i will keep on stopping them,....using my own ways

you can do nothing....
honestly,, people do what they want no matter what, you can talk and advise as much as you can, but you cannot do more than that.
it's like seeing all those people smoking their health down, with all the commercial against it, and all of them know for a fact that it's killing them, but they don't care!
good luck though....

If that's their attitude, there's not much you can do about it. Hell, most smokers don't understand how serious their addiction is and they laugh at it too. Sad.

By leaving them alone and not trying to control them. If they die, they die happy.
Besides, the moment human life becomes more important than human integrity, we're damned.
