Has anyone used Helium.com and if so, is there really money to be made with the articles you write?

My cousin tried it and wasn't too pleased. He wasn't paid too much. My roommate is a freelance writer and prefers www.associatedcontent.com. She usually gets paid about $7-8 for her articles (she writes articles about cooking, weddings, finance, etc.) I guess they have special offers and pay $8-10 for specific topics. I've read a lot of informative articles on the site.
