Helium is a community of people sharing knowledge. The Helium four-prong formula is: "Reading, writing, rating and reward."
Reading: Whether you are researching what movie to see or what car to buy, it’s always great to hear from many different people to get the whole story. At Helium, many people can write on a given topic providing readers with insight gained from multiple points of view.
Writing: At Helium, anyone can write on a wide variety of topics, everything from parenting to personal finance, and they are paid a portion of the advertising revenue earned by their articles. The earnings are into perpetuity so if you write 100 articles, you will continue to get paid for those articles month after month as long as they continue to generate ad revenue.
Rating: Helium uses the power of people to organize the chaos. This is accomplished by giving writers the opportunity to rate other people's articles in an A vs. B fashion. This peer-reviewed rating system allows the best content to "float to the top" (Helium) so all the content is organized and easy to navigate.
Reward: The better your content, the higher your article ranking, the more page views your articles get, the more ad revenue you earn.
Good luck at Helium.

My cousin tried it and wasn't too pleased. He wasn't paid too much. My roommate is a freelance writer and prefers www.associatedcontent.com. She usually gets paid about $7-8 for her articles (she writes articles about cooking, weddings, finance, etc.) I guess they have special offers and pay $8-10 for specific topics. I've read a lot of informative articles on the site.
