The previous poster is wrong to list WW I. At the time of WW I the United States was ranked 15th among the world's military powers, we were tied with Persia (Iran.)

However after World War II we were THE undisputed powerhouse on earth since we were the ONLY nation to have atomic weapons at our disposal. Of course on September 23, 1949 the U.S.S.R. duplicated that feat by detonating their own atomic weapon but between July 1945 and September 23, 1949 we were on top of the world.

Following World War Two, before the soviets gained atomic weapons and even shortly thereafter. England was still a superpower during world war one, and hardly warrants a comparison with the USA at the time. With the fall of the USSR, the USA was thrust onto the world stage as the only superpower in existance, although China is beginning to threaten that position.
