Mars (IPA: /ˈmɑɹz/ (GenAm); /ˈmɑːz/ (RP)) is the fourth planet from the Sun. The planet is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. Mars is also known as “The Red Planet” due to its reddish appearance as seen from Earth. The prefix areo-, from the Greek god of war, Ares, refers to Mars in the same way geo- refers to Earth.
Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and oddly shaped. These may be captured asteroids similar to 5261 Eureka, a Mars Trojan asteroid. Mars can be seen from Earth with the naked eye. Its apparent magnitude reaches −2.9, a brightness surpassed only by Venus, the Moon, and the Sun. For much of the year, Jupiter may appear brighter to the naked eye than Mars.
Until the first flyby of Mars by Mariner 4 in 1965, it was hoped, both within and outside scientific circles, especially in the popular media and literary circles, that Mars had ample liquid water. This was based on observations of periodic variations in light and dark patches, particularly in the polar latitudes, and long dark striations that could perhaps even be irrigation channels of liquid water.
These straight line features were shown not to exist and explained as optical illusions. Still, of all the planets in our solar system other than Earth, Mars is the most likely to harbor liquid water, and perhaps life. Mars' rotational period and seasonal cycles are also similar to those of the Earth. It has the highest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons, the largest canyon in the solar system, Valles Marineris, and polar ice caps. Geological evidence suggests that Mars previously had large-scale water coverage, while observations also indicate small geyser-like water flows in recent years. [1]

The martian "soil" contains epsom salts and peroxides, so if in the future, you were on Mars, and you cut yourself inside your base and you wanted to prevent infection by cleaning the wound, you could just go outside, scoop up some martian "soil" and put it on your wound.
As was mentioned above, the temperatures can be crazy cold, but sometimes, during the summers around the equator, the temperatures can reach as high as 77 degrees F. So for those days, all you would need is a suit that has an oxygen supply, pressurization, and UV protection, as opposed to all of the above with added temperature control. You should see some of the models of the new suits being developed for a manned Mars mission, they are absolutely nothing like you would expect.
The martian year is almost twice as long as ours, meaning that temperature differentials around the planet can become so extreme that global dust storms can obscure the planet for months to equalize global temperatures on the planet.
Liquid water cannot exist on the martian surface due to the less than 1% atmospheric pressure than that found on earth. A cup of water in your hand would immediately boil away out of the cup into the atmosphere.

Hello Sylar:
Mars has a diameter of 4,220 Miles.
Mars' average distance from the Sun is 141.6 Million miles.
Mars goes around the Sun in 687 of our Earth days.
Mars spins around (just like the Earth) in 24.62 Earth hours.
The Surface temperature on Mars ranges from -195 Degrees F
to +77 Degrees F. So, when it gets cold there, it is really cold.
Mars has 2 moons; Demos (orbits Mars in 30 hours 18 Earth minutes), and Phobos (orbits Mars in 7 hours 39 earth minutes).
Both moons are odd shaped (not spheres). These are thought to be asteroids that passed close enough to be captured by Mars' gravity.
Mars has a magnitude in the sky of - 2.0 average, and is slightly reddish in color. The red stands out against the white color of nearby stars.
In 2004 the robiotic rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars and began numerous explorations and scientific tests. The collected data was radio transmitted back to the Earth.
Have fun,
Zah

You will live for 30 seconds if you are on Mars without a special suit.
It is -20 degrees in the summer, which is pretty nice for a planet besides Earth.

well ive been there and like the show you erase your memory when you get back on earth and then you wonder why you hop skip side ways like a dork then you remember I was on mars for months and this is the way you walk on a low gravity planet.
