LOL the first thing that comes to mind is Robin Williams in Patch Adams. Have you seen the movie? If not, the best scene is when he starts walking down the street and randomly saying "Hi" to people and smiling; then he hangs upside down from a tree and the little old lady walks by without a smile; he tells his partner 'wait for it'. She turns around and smiles. You can easily try something similar by going to the mall and walking by people, saying hi how are you today and seeing the reaction you get. Watch Patch Adams if you haven't.

Select a varied test group of any size, or, just do this yourself.

There is one rule to follow for 24 hours straight, no exceptions, that is no communication (from you or to you) of any kind. Not one word can be spoken during that time period.

That includes, obviously, answering the phone, even chatting with a pet or humming.

No communicating through TMs or IMs or writing or any other form of communication. NO E MAIL. Grunting and groaning during a sport's game is a no no, as is playing a musical instrument or a tech instrument.

The point is to be completely self contained, completely inside your own head, all alone, for this 24 hour period. Getting lost in a good book would defeat the purpose. So would listening to music or playing music or a game of any kind. Watching TV is, obviously, also forbidden.

I did this one in college. It's an eye opener.

Before the 24 hour peiod began, I and my classmates were allowed to write, using ten words or less of our own choosing, on a 3 x 5 index card, that would explain our behaviour to outsiders, if an explanation became necessary.

Completing homework was allowed, as long as accomplishing this did not interfere with or break any of the rules.

Once the 24 hour period is complete, to the last minute, record your candidate's verbal accounts.

Good luck. It's tougher than you imagine.

You can do an expirment on how people act when you violate standard social norms. They talked about this in one of my Psych. classes. For example:
- walk into an elevator and don't turn toward the door
- take the bus and even though there are empty seats sit right next to someone
- go to the school library and even though there are empty seats sit right next to someone
- stand very close when talking to someone

Do something with sex. Lock men in a room for an hour with a television that shows only sports and a bunch of skin magazines. See which one they go for the majority of the time. Record the results.

try a survey titled "how often people masturbate" then ask people compared to APA averages and actually guage their honesty in the + or - the p-value. Then follow up with "how often do you lie" and correlate their answers with their masturbation responses.

Women will say rarely or never, often, but the average is something like 1 to 2 times daily. Have them use numbers per day/week/month, not "often" or "never". Mine the data.
