i am a big fan of Dr. King as he fought not only for equal rights for african americans, but also for white women.
I think he was a great leader and it is a shame that there are people who feel his life should not be celebrated.
Unfortunatly there are those who feel supreior to other based on such superficial things as skin color. It makes me sad to think that my children (who are biracial) will have people who dont accept them because of that. I am proud though of my oldest son who thinks it is "very cool" that he is black AND white.
sorry i got off topic
have a blessed day

I disagree. You are obviously younger than I am. I remember when MLK was assissinated. He was really not very popular. They have rewritten history to make him out to be a combination of Joan of Arc, George Washington and Mother Theresa. I believe that he was just a political opportunist taking advantage of a shameful situation.
Black people were not treated as they should have been by some whites. Most whites that I knew didn't have much opionion about blacks, because they kept to themselves pretty much. I don't remember hearing about whites who didn't like blacks ( I lived in CT).
The problem was in the South. It was a result of Reconstruction. During Reconstruction, whites were disenfranchised (not allowed to vote) in the South. In many southern areas, the legislatures were made up of former slaves. They used their new position to abuse souther whites, most of whom had never owned slaves.
After Reconstruction, the whites got the upper hand, and continued to abuse blacks right up until the Sixties.
I think that the friction between blacks and whites would have disappeared sooner if there had been less confrontation. Today, we have the same forces trying to alienate blacks from whites with "rap", and the whole "hip-hop" culture. Again, it is confrontation that is preventing assimilation.
You don't make friends by confrontation.
I would rather see a holiday for Booker T. Washington, than MLK. BTW was an advocate of setting a good example. MLK was an advocate of confrontation.

I even ought to accept as true with this. the position is Bayard Rustin day? He develop right into a thorough communist, yet did extra for the Civil Rights circulate than Martin Luther King Jr ever did. perhaps the actual incontrovertible truth that he develop into brazenly gay is why no human being bothers to communicate about him. All of those topics will be bypassed if we did have a "civil rights" day the position lets appreciate human beings like Susan B Anthony, Bayard Rustin, and different civil rights icons somewhat of only that poser MLK.

Veteran's Day is no longer considered a 'legal' holiday in the state of California. So much for giving one's life for their country.

So your saying Martin luther king was the one who got rid of the Jim Crow laws?
Wrong.
All he did was cause riots in the street and asumed if not all, then most white men were racist and evil. Congress was the ONLY one who got rid of the Jim Crow Laws. No one else.

I hate to say it but MLK unfortunately caused us greater harm!! he didn't do it intentionally though!! See back then African Americans were more closer and had business and money generating in our communities! Now we kill and hate on each other or compete with one another and why?! This did not go on when we had a common enemy!! Thats why!!
