All our wars have easily explained economic rationales. Don't believe me. Here's a quick rundown:
1. Iraqi Freedom -- control over oil supply. Prevent instability caused by Saddam tweaking through Oil for Food program. Bust OPEC price setting through failed neo-con strategy.
2. Afghanistan -- Geo-political control over new oil pipelines through Central Asia and feeding China, Russia.
3. Desert Storm -- control over oil reserves of Kuwait, UAE, Qatar.
4. All of South and Central America -- prevent spread of alternate market model in our hemisphere.
5. Vietnam / Korea-- prevent spread of alternate economic model in Asia. Alternate model carries risk that US would be shut out or marginalized.
6. WWII -- prevent Stalinist USSR from gaining control over European resources. Note that Congress knew about the Holocaust in the mid 30s, but we did not declare war on Germany until 1943 -- the year the USSR reversed the German front.
On and on.

Martin -- we trade the lives of foreigners, and some of our soldiers, for our own economic stability. That's what we do. That's the essence of it. If we can agree that's what we do, do you think we should?

Beach man -- oh, I think you are talking about WWII. You are trying to say we went to fight to overthrow an evil. I say you are wrong. Hitler was our friend. Fascist Germany had a very strong relationship with corporate America. Ford plants in Germany produced tank shells for the Panzers. Hitler had a picture of Henry Ford on his desk. Nazi Germany was a principal trading partner, and our friend. The timing of our war against Germany exacly coincided with the USSR beginning to push Germany back into Europe. Imagine you are Churchill and FDR, sitting at a Summit. You are facing the prospect of Stalin overrunning all Europe and turning Europe 100% Soviet. An absolutely unacceptable prospect. That thinking exactly explains the timing of our entry into the war. You are right -- human rights had nothing to do with it at the leadership level. The troops fought against evil. But the leaders sent them for economic reasons.
