in about 1973 when i was about four, me and my brother who was about six were playing with our toy cars on the floor in the bathroom of our house, this weird spider ran out from under the bath its body was bright blue and its legs were bright red.

it scared the hell out of both of us and we both ran away

its not like any native species in Britain that i've heard of. yet this childhood memory has stayed with me for years.

What was it ????

When you're a little boy of four any spider or insect would look big and scary. But to look at one now you'd think...what harm can he do. I say "HE" because I looked in my book of spiders and saw two of what you described. The male has a blue body with red legs and the female has a brownish body with red legs. ATYPUS AFFINIS the english purse spider found in southern england Wales and Ireland.

Got some in my shed, red legs, pale translucent body, which you might call pale blue under certain lighting ,or on reflective surfaces. With the passage of time, and a toddlers obvious exaggeration,a fairly common Spider of dark and damp places, becomes a legendary beast !

I haven't seen one quite like that, but I have seen one with a cream body and red legs. I figured it was probably an albino, and most likely the one you saw was too, as most of them have brown legs and earth-tone coloured bodies e.g. it was an ordinary native species but being an albino mutant it was red and blue because those colours would show without its normal pigment.

There are many different kind of spiders. The one you saw on your bathroom floor is just a different kind of spider than a normal one, but because you were a kid then it looked weird to you.
