She said that it just wouldn't connect her to the Internet--it would say connecting, but would not allow her to access the Internet. I wasn't there, so I don't know too many details. This is all new to us, we just got a wireless router and cable Internet--always have used dial up, so just learning this stuff.

You shouldn't need to worry about an IP address - the router will allocate one automatically for her.

What was the problem?

Did her laptop not find the wi-fi signal (your access point)?
If it did find it, did it say it was encrypted?
If so, did you give her the "key" to let her connect.

At what point did it "not work" - what was done to try and MAKE it work - does she have a wifi card in her laptop? If so, is it set to roam for any wifi signals if it cannot connect to her main one?

Please add lots more info to your question or it is not going to be easy to help you

Your router has a different IP handle so as that it could connect on your modem, which has it relatively is very own IP handle. The IP handle that persons might see coming from the two considered one of your connections may be the comparable, yet on the down-flow area of your router, you the two have distinctive IP's. in any different case, the router would not be waiting to distinguish between the two computers. Your modem might desire to have an IP like seventy 4.23.112.x. Your router's IP is in all probability the default one in case you haven't any longer set it up in yet differently, installation guy or woman IP's regionally for each community related consumer (i.e. 164.ninety two.a million.a million for one laptop, then the subsequent would be 164.ninety two.a million.2, and so on...)

You have to get a wireless router, and even if you do find a wireless network most people lock theirs with an encryption could like me so nobody can freeload. Sorry you will have to get a router.

You don't need to know your IP addresses if youre wireless uses DHCP (like about 99.9% of them are set up to do!). Simply scan for your network (or enter your SSID) and WPA key.
