Stephen King is highly over-rated.
Try some Heather Graham (the author, not the actress) She does a lot of ghost story type tales. The one I remember most is called The Presence. Although her stories tend to lean a little to the romantic side.
Also Tami Hoag wrote a ghost story called "Magic"...again, more for the chick's
And Dean Koontz wrote one called The Face that was kind of a ghost story...sort of a lost soul caught between Heaven and Hell. You also might like his Odd Thomas series...Odd's constant companion is the ghost of Elvis Presley

The Bell Witch: An American Haunting
The Bell Witch is a paranormal entity from American southern folklore. Also called the Bell Witch Haunting, it was a series of paranormal events the Bell family of Adams, TN experienced between 1817 and 1821.
These events are said to have been witnessed and documented by hundreds of people, among them future President of the United States Andrew Jackson, and consequently the episode represents one of the most famous and documented instances of paranormal events in history.

Stephen King is probably you're best bet, he makes the ordinary creepy....... The Stand, Cujo, Salem's Lot, Christine. anything from before 1990 and after 2000 is a good choice.
Clive Barker is also creepy. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (more about the monsters that people can turn into than)

"Bag of Bones" by Stephen King was a very cool book. It was a ghost story. One of my favorites.
Another by Stephen King is "Pet Sematary". The book is MUCH creepier than the movie and if you read it at night, you will get scared.
"Psycho" by Robert Bloch is also a good read, again, MUCH better than the movie.

Stephen King isn't scary. The only one remotely scary was Salem's Lot.
