Try blowing very hard in side the disc slot. If this does not work take a hair dryer and try that instead of blowing. It may still take a while for the game to work, but trust me after enough work you will be able to play your games again!

It might be dust on the sensors or on the lazer. Try using some compressed air to blow it away (never use a vacume to suck it out).
If this doesnt work, you might have to buy a new PS2 or ante up for the PS3.

Thats what happened to mine.
Only, I messed something up worse, and it scratched my game.

It has something to do with the little laser in the disk drive that reads the games. It moves back and forth, and mine had appeared to stop moving.
Try putting grease on the rods.

Either that, or just buy a new one.

It's getting old my friend. Mine is from 2000, and it will only play two or three of my 20 games. It just won't load most games anymore, and it scratches discs up.

This happens to a lot of PS2s. Sony put in the cheapest eye they could find and it collects dust easily. Read about it here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2#Disc_Read_Error
