I thought it was kind of a slur that a white person would say to a Mexican. But a Mexican called you a beaner? All I can think is that they think you're trying to act like them, and they're making fun of you. In that sense it might be similar to gringo.

I've only heard it used in reference to a Mexican - beaner meaning that they eat a lot of beans. I don't find it to be a nice term and find it surprising that a Mexican used it. I guess that's like blacks that use the N word- but get angry if anyone else does.

Are you sure that he/she was calling you a beaner and not him/herself a beaner? Because that is usually a demeaning slang term for a Mexican.

everyone has told you that it's term crudely used to indicate a person of Mexican decent, but it got me thinking ,what other ethnic groups are described by the food they eat. I am not trying to insult anyone I just thought it was interesting.

mackerel snapper ----- A person of the Catholic Faith
Spaghetti bender ------ An Italian
Grit ---------------- In the Marines Southerners were called this.
Limey ------------------ An English person

I can't think of any more, but you get the picture
