In early cartoons he has a tail but later it is removed. Why?

It was tragically lost while filming a version of "Three Blind Mice"
The actress playing the farmer's Wife was a "Method Actor" and got carried away.
Sadly, doctors at that time lacked the technology to reattach the severed tail.

if your meaning a red tailed shark its because hes on the menu if hes black (or gray if hes unhappy) with a red tail then its a red tailed shark just google image it to be sure but thats probably why

he had a close call with a mouse trap. they tried to rush him to the hospital to get it reattached but it failed. it was bad they had to put ten tiny mouse stitches on Mikey and he was unable to sit for weeks. it ended up being a prank gone bad.
