The dress code stated that up to five piercings are allowed above the neck, no lip rings.
I have to sign this dress code contract before I was hired, and before I had my lip ring.
I work in an ob/gyn office as a phlebotomist, which is the practice of taking blood samples.
I'm a fulltime college student and mostly do chart prep.
I live in NY, US.

In some States they can fire you for any reason that doesn't include any of the discrimination guidelines in place. Any reason.

good luck & blessing

A job does not fire you, an employer can fire you from a job, let's face it, lip rings are not exactly hot items in an office, people tend to get all sorts of ideas and think up all sort of misconceptions about the bearer of a lip ring, most important is that although you might have gotten it done at a reputable business, there is always the belief that you willingly placed yourself at risk during the procedure and might've contracted aids without being aware of it. Some jobs you can get away with the nose ring, like the fashion business, design, anything that has to do with creativity, art, dance, showbusiness, the rock music industry, the movie and entertainment business take it in stride because it is accepted, but in corporate circles, and in any other where you are the image of the company you work for that is not exactly acceptable. If a company loses business on account of a client that does not wish to deal with you, then the company loses, you lose as well, so they deal with it. That's business.

It is true that in some states, they don't have to have a reason other than federal law. They can fire you at will. I live in one of those states.
Other than that, if your dress code has some general statement such as "presenting a professional and businesslike appearance", that would cover visible piercings, such as your lip ring. A dress code cannot cover every thing that a person might choose to do that affects their appearance, so that kind of statement covers the stuff that they didn't think of naming specifically or didn't exist when they wrote the code.

i think it would be tacky to fire someone over a lip ring. the proper thing to do would just be saying things weren't working out or giving them probabations for stupid reasons until they left or stacked up enough probabions they could be fired. you can be fired under a clause that you didn't behave in the company's best interest without any specifics given -- so welcome to fascism 2007.

legally employees have very few rights in the united states. getting your lip pierced is not a right protected by the united states government. sorry.

If it is an "at will" state they can fire you for anything they want without reason. Yo would have to prove that they fired you on the basis of discrimination and lst I checked a lip ring is not protected under that. If you work in a corporate environment you could bank on being let go or not moving up unless you know somebody. You just cant do something like and expect to be accepted or taken seriously in an office

as many have said if you're an at will employment state you can be fired for any reason.

Chalk this one up to experience and know that while it may be your body and you can do what you want with it...it's also THEIR company and they can employ whomever they want so long as it doesn't fall under the anti-discrimination rules and tats and piercings are not a protected class. So if that piercing is worth losing your job over then by all means have at it....

In Ireland, no they can't. It's illegal. In England, I've heard they can from schools. And in Japan you'd be out on your ear before you could draw breath.

It really depends on where you are. In California, employment is "at will." This means that except for specifically protections such as age, sex, race, etc., you can be fired for just about any reason.

yes they can. You represent the company. If you decide to change your appearance in a way that the boss thinks degrades the integrity of the office, he can fire you. He can offer for you to take it out at work if he is nice, but if he thinks that the kind of person to get piercings like that are not what he wants, he can fire you without asking you to take it out.

Also, the company policy statement does not have to explicitly say anything.

I doubt it. But people have other ways to make someone leave Job beside firing.
