It sounds like you have the old Michelin "TRX" metric-sized tires found on some BMW's and for a couple of years in the mid-80's on the Ford Mustang GT.

TRX was an attempt by Michelin to go to pure metric sizing which ended up a flop. Nobody else took the bait and Michelin dropped the whole thing after a few years. People who bought cars with metric sized wheels though were screwed.

Because 390mm = 15.35 inches no, you can not just put a tire designed for a 15-inch wheel on that rim. You either have to pony up for the hyper-expensive TRX (which is still made in small batches using 1970's technology and available only through select vendors) or you can buy a different set of rims to mount conventionally sized modern tires on. Most owners go with the latter. You can often pick up nice used 15-inch BMW wheels through the local BMW club or on-line auctions for not too much money. The best modern size to use would be a P225/60R15 95H or 225/60R15 86H which is the size BMW used after they gave up on the TRX experiment.

Mark F is right you have a car with millimetric rims, the system works very well and was a good idea, but nobody else used it except for some Ferrari's and Rover used it on the Maestro/Montego in the 80's. You can only fit metric tyres to these rims because of the rim design, NO OTHER TYRE WILL FIT SAFELY. Try a search for Longstones Tyres, they have a really good helpful website and the guys there are nice to talk to, they will advise you well with your options.

Why not buy a set of alloy wheels complete with tyres for the car? Still cheaper than the metric tyres, and make the car look smart as well. Buy a copy of Max Power, and have a look at the wheel deals from various suppliers in there. 15" wheels and tyres dirt cheap these days.

To be honest, you can get away with 205/55/R15's, theres no such thing as /390, this is because that is the size of the actuall metal rim/alloy. Example: 390 would prob fit a truck?

205/ is the width,/55 is from outer tyre to the rim/alloy & again R15's is the size of the rim/alloy wheel.

205/55/R15's are the smallest, the bigger you go you would have to put flash alloys on?
You can get tyres from any scrap yard for about £10-00 each. Remember it's either R15's, 16's upto 24 inches, which is on beefed up cars.

H-Rated Michelin MXV4 are the only all-seasons I can think of that might fall inside your budget. Pirelli P6000 is a decent enough summer tire. Ran a set with good results. Not sure if you can get it in a size for the 525i. Continental Touring Contact AS are OK but not great. I've had them as OE tires on a 325i and a Volvo. They are useless in snow.

200 beans is about right for a 55 series 390- tire.
I doubt if the rims or for that mater the fenders on a beemer are going to accept much of anything else.
I love it when people buy a car and don't realize that it has a $1000 of tires on it.

it depends on what yearof the bimmer. was 230/55/390 the stock measurements? you can put different tire sizes on depending on the wheel sizes, rims, winter tires, etc. just grab the same tires and put them on. for one of my cars I put falken tires on mine and they were like 170 a pop. You got a 5 series you should be able to cough up the dough
