What would happen if we vibrated or refracted space rather than bent or folded it?

General Relativity does allow the possibility of "spacetime waves", which could be caused by sudden changes in a gravitational field, such as two black holes colliding into each other. They're called "gravity waves", which are incredibly weak but still theoretically measurable. LIGO detectors have already been set up to detect such gravity waves.

It's quite possible that in a dense field of gravitational masses, gravity waves could be "refracted" as it passes through it, much like how light is refracted in matter composed of atoms or molecules. But I'm really winging with this one. I can't tell you for sure.

On the other hand, since quantum physics posits that for all particles (including massless particles like photons), there are associated deBrolige phase waves, it might be possible to view such phase waves as "oscillating spacetime". But this would require an overhaul of General Relativity, because in quantum physics, deBroglie waves are complex entities involving the imaginary number and phase, and General Relativity doesn't have that.

And then of course, we got String Theory, which is another subject. I'm pretty sure, though, that you're not talking about strings.

All these ideas are esoteric.

You can't vibrate nothing (empty Space = nothing).

You can't refract nothing (empty Space emits nothing)

Bending and folding space is a theory relating to how space might actually be shaped. It is not a process we are "doing"
out there in a garage somewhere.
