How many times would you accept "I'm sorry, it won't happen again" from an alcoholic who gets mean when drunk and won't go to AA or an inpatient detox? (and has private insurance that will pay so there isn't any money issue) I'm thinking maybe three and then it's adios amigo?

The rules are slightly different when it comes to an alcoholic, especially a mean one. Tough Love is sometimes necessary before they get motivated to change. I'd accept the apology once, then it's either get help, or leave.

It sounds like this person has not even admitted that the alcohol is a problem. By continually accepting the apologies you are actually enabling them to continue because sorry is enough. So the drunken actions are essentially excused. Besides a mean drunk whether an alcoholic or just a social drinker is trouble.

Pay attention to this because this is the same advice my mother gave me when I was going through a bad time with and abusive ex husband. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!" That is all it should take. If a person is truely sorry, they don't make the same mistake twice. I've only taken them back once. After that, it's pretty much asking for trouble. If they won't change, leave them. That's all you can do. Thank you and good luck.

If they get physical, don't accept the first apology. Just pack up and leave. People who hit don't change. Chances are, you will never hear what you want. Save yourself the misery and leave now.

If violent I'd report them to the police
If only an alchoholic [yea I can't spell all that well] and not harmful personally take them to meeting...
If after that didn't work, leave them
