That's a very subjective question. Much of Bristol is a crime-ridden dump with high insurance premiums. It's car crime rate is nearly the highest in the country (see upmystreet.com for the national comparisons)
However, to balance all that bad stuff I will say that the really good bits (apart from the Suspension Bridge, Temple Meads Old Station, the docks, the Cameron's balloon factory, Concorde, etc.) is the best bit - "SMILES BEER".

I have lived in the Bristol my whole life and HATE it, but can NOT afford to move away.

Well, Hotwells is a great place to live. I came down for a weekend ten years ago and I'm still here!
Friendly folk, great accent, good pubs, wonderful history and architecture - it's got the lot, luvver!

it just it.
it's got its bad sides, as everywhere else, but on the whole it's just great... the shops on park street; clifton village; the downs; gloucester road; the countryside on your doorstep... there's something for everyone here :)
when i came over i thought i'd move away to london as soon as my course finished, but just like it too much!! bristol's brilliant and i have no intention of moving away!

on second thoughts I'd move there just to live in fishponds or catbrain hill. what fantastic place names
