A drahtfunk radio was used in Germany during WWII to alert citizens of coming allied air-raids. I've read that it made a characteristic ticking or pinging sound that alerted people to listen for details about a coming air-raid. I'd like to know if someone can describe these sounds and more about how this radio worked. I'd also like to know if it was a separate device from the government issued radios issued by the Nazi government. What did it look like? There is next to no english information on the web about this.

the drahtfunk radio was not only in use in germany but also in switzerland and norway.
First the system was used in parts of the counrty's where the radiowaves didn't perform well like in mountains and wouds and the radio operated via the electricity network. This was changed in the 1930's when they started to use the telefoon network first at low frequency ( only one channel and you had to choose between lisening to the radio or to telephone) and there after high freq.600 hz to 150 khz ( up to 6 channels and the telephone could work togetter with the radio) you only needed a splitter to separeted you telephone and your'e radio. A you can say it's the grandfather of high speed internet connection via you're telephone line.
Germany used it in the war because
- the enemy couldn't disturbe the signal
- a radiostation that emits a signal , it can be used to direct the enemy bombers on to there target.
- the telephone network isn't destuyed by 1 succesfull attack , a radiostation can be destruyed by one bom.
from the 1930's the german radio's had almost all the possibility to plug them in onto the drathfunk ( this was not founed by the gouverment by only started to use it later on )

In case of a air raid the radiostations did give warnings to th population by brothcasthing but when the air raid can to close to the citys the radiostations wenth of the air to prevent homing in onto the city from where they where brouthcasting.
Then stared the radio to sent true the drathfunk and they kept the population informed about the air raid
The music ( something like DO, MI, SOL, SI and always repeated ) that they used was only used to indicated that the telephone was active and the info about the bombers was spoken langues

after the war it was still in use untill the 1950 and mostly used in berlin in the american sector
