When someone says "be normal" they are saying "be more like me." You are right, there is no such thing as normal. I suspect you are going through a rebellious phase because you are frustrated with your parents lack of understanding and invalidation. You are probably on a higher intellectual level and need to move on to a more intelligent group of peers. Get into a good college, and go into a career that challenges your mind. Don't argue with people that say things like that, just pretend like you appreciate their advice, and ignore it. Learn to artfully brush off stupid people without them realizing they've been brushed off. This is a very important skill you must learn and will use every day for the rest of your life.

It's not about being shallow. It's about conforming to what they perceive and real and normal proper behavior. While I think that people should be able to express the way they truly are, I think that societal pressures in conformity are necessary. We know what are limits are when it comes to behavior. Because of social constraints such as this, we understand the difference between right and wrong. So, try not to judge too harshly :-).

There is no normal it's just people trying to conform and act in a way that they've been conditioned to believe is right in their particular society. It's when they actually stop being themselves in order to get approval. If you're the type to march to beat of your own drummer, people r telling you to be normal because they're afraid of you, just because you think for yourself. People fear the unknown and differences instead of celebrating them. You also probably make some people jealous that they haven't been true to themselves throughout their lives, or they might just genuinely believe you're wrong for not conforming and being "normal" like everyone else. So either way it's their issue not yours, keep staying true to yourself, it's the only way to be content with your life.

People want you to be "Normal" because that is like everyone else. There is no such thing as normal because everyone is different. Just be yourself.

The set of "rules" written for us to go by is so ancient. Luckily, people are rebellious. As time goes on we further from the original rules. Most of the time the older generations are the uptight ones. I'm not sure how old your family is but Elvis was shocking at one point...WHAT? I say as long as you don't hurt yourself or others who cares as long as you are happy. Who decides what is normal or crazy anyways....PEOPLE WHO ARE AFRAID OF CHANGE! It would be a boring world if we were all the same!

Telling someone else to be normal is rude and wrong. Normal for you might not be normal for me and I do not have the right to ask or expect you to think as I do. Are we being shallow...? No, I think we are just being human.

People think you're 'weird' if you don't look like everyone else - if you're not a wannabe. If you called 'weird' or told to 'be normal', good on you. That shows you're totally unique. About your family, they possibly tell you that for a joke if you act a bit weird, my parents tell me that all the time because I'm crazy - I think they want you to calm down a bit!

But don't worry about anyone else - they're jealous - and besides, what is normal?

Normal is a word that has it's root as "norm". A social norm is what people deem to be an acceptable form of behavior. But just as truth, normal is in the eyes of the beholder.

In their eyes there is a NORMAL way to act, and your not acting that way. A better concept would be: ACT ACCEPTABLY. Like every one else does: do not dress funny and do not have an opinion of your own. THE DARK AGES!

I think normal differs from person to person. What is normal for me , may not be normal for you. Normal to me is what each individual person is happy with. But society has a set of made up rules for what normal is.
I say just be yourself be happy with you. And let others think what they want.

Good Luck!
