You use I as and when the first personal singular is the subject.
When it is the object you use me.

Example.

I hit the ball.
The ball hit me

The word "I" is the first person singular personal pronoun in the nominatve case.

That means it can be used as a substitute for the person speaking, writing, or doing an action.

A common misuse is as a compound direct obect...as is described above.

i truly loathe when people say "my mom took took my sister and i to the store" when it should be "my sister and me to the store"

if you take out the my sister then it would read "my mother took i to the store" now does that make sense to you

i didnt think so
