Oh they're quite different yes. I have been to Africa, there's no comparison really, beyond looks. And even that, in some cases, many of the Africans I saw, particularly in certain regions like Uganda, they're so dark-skinned they almost appear "dark blue", although I know that sounds silly. Whereas many black Americans often in reality are not really "black" skinned like those Africans are, but more like a caramel or even just a very light shade. (Obviously that's due to having been mixed with whites, or with others, over their many generations here in America).
They act totally differently. One need only be there a day to observe this. They speak usually French, some speak Portuguese or Dutch (remainders of the colonial eras of course), as well as English. But when they speak English it is often with a strong French-sounding accent usually (at least that is how they spoke English where I was at in Africa). They're very different in mannerisms, traits, etc. As far as culturally, you mentioned "family life" and "education", the differences are so vast one could write a lengthy book.
Granted there are differences as well between white Americans and white Europeans from the "ancestral" countries of the white Americans, but sometimes , if the white American in question is not very far removed (like only 1 or 2 generations for example) the differences are nowhere near as apparent as between Africans and black Americans. For example, many whites of European descent, who are not very far removed from their peoples' homeland, they could go right back over there if they had to and meld nearly seamlessly into those societies (esp.if they speak the language already or grew up speaking it, as many of us did). Whereas the black American would have no clue about the language , for starters, and would obviously have a much much tougher time adapting to the generally poor and harsh life in the central or west African regions from whence (most of) their people were originally brought to America.

Well not all african Americans or Africans have the same personality, family or education. But because we're American that alone is a big difference. Africans are VERY diverse there might be some groups that are similar and others that aren't.

African life is different from American life. African environments may have different standards and rules for the people; like marriage and conflict. In America, African Americans follow the American life, in order to live regularly in the country. People have to adapt to their environments.

Their culture is completely different from american culture. They have no reference to what african americans have been through throughout history as americans have no idea what african culture as family life or education in Africa has been for them. I would say they are very very different.

My father (from Africa) thinks that blacks here are a joke. He ridicules them and so do his African friends. Sometimes, they have a point.

In what way should they be different, if they come overwhelmingly from the same cauldron. However, do not forget some Afro-Americans have been there for a few hundreds of years and could have evolved differently. Apart from this, they are mentally very different from one another.
