ICMP stands for Internet Control Message Protocol and is used to
send error messages on networked computers.

It is also frequently used to determine if a network path exists between two computers.

This is the technical term for a ping. A ping is used to determine if a computer is connected to the internet. I guess the important question here is where did this come up? Pings have historically been the backbone of denial of service attacks.
