I want to put down some shade grass seed in a small area of my yard. I live in the south. Can I go ahead and seed even though it's still winter?

In the south it rarely works well to seed anything this time of year. If you want Fescue, and you are far enough north-in-the-south to grow it, wait until fall. You will get 100% better success. If you want Bermuda or Centipede, wait until mid to late May, when temperatures are warming up nicely. Those two like heat for germination and establishment. The other southern turfgrasses like Zoysia, St Augustine, and Hybrid Bermuda, are difficult to impossible to establish from seed. Use sprigs, plugs, or sod for them.

I suppose you live in an area of some freeze and thaw If so you certainly may reseed It's called frost seeding if the area is bare and you have the desire and a garden rake go scratch around a bit, if its a small enough an area. If not don't worry about it ,just scatter the seed on the ground. as the soil surface freezes and thaws ( or as you might perceive frost on the grasses) those seeds will make contact and when the soil temperatures are warm enough the seeds will germinate.I have very tight soil in mid Indiana and have noticed that even on a hard clay area it continues to thicken even into now the 3rd year.

It's okay and maybe even better to seed with temperatures about 50 degrees. I live in the north, where it's subzero right now with the wind chill factor, however, we always seed in the fall when the temperature is cooler but not yet freezing. So, I think it's safe for you to seed.

However, I am really, really jealous! LOL!
