It is both. There are certain instincts we have from birth i.e. reaction to loud noises and the ability to trust or mistrust individuals we have heard, smelled or been mistreated by. This is the nature i.e. innate abilities of humans. The other side of us is nurture, i.e. what we learn from others in a social situation. Social learning requires a model to imitate, a behaviour to imitate, reinforcement of the behaviour and reward if we are to repeat it. Certain things we will do innately, others we have learned or conditioned to react to through observation of others.

It is without a drought BOTH. I was raised in a abusive family but I have been told I am one of the most compassionate people they know. I would always ask God why are you letting this happen to me, as a little girl who wet the bed and was told if you wet the bed you will get a beating in the morning. I did not understand then why God was allowing me to go threw that but I do know. If I never would have gone threw alot of the things I have I don't think I would be as compassionate. And then there are others that are just good natured no mater what, angels on earth. I WOULD GO THREW IT ALL AGAIN TO TURN OUT THE WAY I AM TODAY. Even the depressed part which is no picnic but I can honestly say that I would do anything I can for anyone as long as I had the means to

Nature is a part, as is nurture. Self determination plays a part too. I've seen good come from an evil background and questionable genetics. More often than that, I've seen evil come from what should have been an ideal background.

If it was nuture alone then we would have the same beliefs and ideas as our siblings but we don't very often! I think it's our life experiences that make us what we are with genetics and nurture playing there own part too.

It is both, people are born with certain traits, but I feel nurture carries more weight than nature. Good example is my family, all three of my siblings grew up with the same parents and parenting techniques and we all three turned out different.
