I struggle to see more than 2 ft in front of me clearly without my contacts or glasses.

so far so good but my mom doesn't so I'm bound to inherit that at some stage,

No. I was told I was legally blind without my glasses when I was 19. Now I'm 66, and believe me, it's worse. I complained to the optometrist a few years ago that even with my latest prescription, I couldn't read the overhead menu at my favorite takeout joint. He told me that was as far as I could be corrected. Bummer. I've stopped playing my favorite online game because I can't see the cards clearly enough without sticking my face within a foot of the screen.

tested only 2 months ago and have good vision not bad for being in my 40s and with family history of glasses and 2 of my children wear glasses

I have about 20/25 with contacts in.
Without them in, it's about 20/40 or so

Only with contacts or glasses and sometimes both so, I guess that would be a 'no'

i was lucky enough to have laser eye surgery 3 months ago. best thing ever!!!! My prescription was soooooooooo bad like -8 in both eyes! Now 20-20.......... nothing beats waking up and not having to search for glassess!
