Depends on which coast you live on......
Hawaii is a lot further from the East Coast.. and USVI is further from California...

I've been to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and St. Croix...
They're all very Carribean-y... with lots of beach and sun and shopping...

They're all owned by other countries, so they have a more international flair..

Both are expensive to get to.. airfare isn't cheap to either choice..

Personally, I would recommend the Virgin Islands. My husband and I got a chance to go to Hawaii in August, and were extremely disappointed. We also cruise in the caribbean every year, and love it there! We can't seem to get enough of it.

If you live on the west coast, though, it may not be so bad to go to Hawaii. Spending 11 hours on flights from Ohio is not much fun (one 8 hour flight), and not really worth the money or the effort.

If you do decide to go to Hawaii, it probably depends on which island you go to. If you go to the Big Island, you might be surprised. It's an amazing part of nature, with many different vegetations. If you're expecting to see the lush vegetation that you see in pictures and on TV, be sure to stay on the Hilo side of the island (also closer to the volcanoes that are still technically active). The other side of the island is covered in black lava rock (including the beaches), and has a lot of stuff to do (kayaking, snorkeling, etc.). I don't know much about the other islands, but other people I know have said that the other islands are better.

The great part about the Virgin Islands is the clearness and beautiful colors of the water, the great beaches, and some wonderful flowers, in addition to having a bunch of stuff to do (or just being able to lay out at the beach that won't cut you).

It's up to what you prefer, but I would choose the Virgin Islands in a heartbeat (if you're driving, though, I think they drive on the other side of the road-at least St. Thomas).

I'd go to the Virgin Islands - not quite as Americanized as Hawaii!

I might be a tad biast when answering this but i'd say go to the virgin islands. Depending on which you intend to go to, the british or american ones you get a different feel but both are very relaxing and offer a lot.
St. thomas has meagans bay, rated one of the top 5 beaches in the world. and you can take a ferry to st.John.
another flight can take you to st.croix which is much more of a party island. they hold carnivals and is much more up beat you could say.
While there are tourists in all the islands, there are many more people who've lived there their entire lives and offer a lot of the culture.
It's amazing....i'm sure you'll enjoy yourself either way.

You didn't say what activities you like to do. My girlfriend and I have been to both in the last 6 months. I enjoyed Maui, but it is rapidly getting commerciallized beyond belief, another Oahu. But hawaii is tops for surf and big sandy beaches. American VI was also wonderful, warm calm water and fish swim right up to shore in the protected lagoons, snorkel heaven. You will need to drive a rental car in Hawaii, but don't even think of it in VI cause they drive on the left side!!

St. John, Virgin Islands. It's the best. Stay at Gallows Point.

From friends who've been to both, Hawaii wins hands down.
