Most people have preconceived notions about a lot of things. They form opinions based on misinformation and things they see on TV which alot of times is balony.

We only know what we see on TV and films and let's face it you've saturated the World with that stuff.

Anyway, I think you're not asking the right question. What you really mean why does the rest of the World judge us and dislike us when they don't know who we really are?

The answer is simple. Your foreign policy ie. the way you treat the rest of the World, especially in recent years with Bush. When Clinton was in power no one hated you and it's not really the American people we hate now it is your governments behaviour and your willingness to either support it or lie down and accept it. To be honest Americans are horribly ignorant of the rest of the World and should learn a bit more or keep quiet and they should realise that the only thing Bush is interested in is power, all this war on terror stuff is nonsense.

Wake up American people! Exactly why do you have that right to bear arms?

No idea. We are supposed to the arrogant ones right? I don't know any Americans (outside of TV) that label and stereotype quite so much as some of the posters from outside the US do here. I doubt many of them have spent much time in the US outside of Disney World, which they mock us for , but then come and visit! I think that most Americans know more about world history than the world knows about our history. I doubt many non Americans have any detailed information about our culture other than what they assume from TV and read in magazines. It's all assumption based on showbiz. And we all know how accurate that is. Would you want us to judge you by some of your shows?

And yes, Americans are aware of what goes on in the world around them. Most people never stop to think that the "dim self centered out of touch Americans" on the news that they see were edited down from however many people were actually stopped and asked. If they want a certain story, of course they aren't going to use the intelligent reports. They are going to use the stupid people. News is easy to manipulate. All countries have jingoistic idiots, just as all countries have fat people, not just here in the US. They just want to paint us as villains,...as fat arrogant morons etc...disregarding the things that don't fit their narrow vision of America and Americans

If they've traveled here extensively they would get a good glimpse of what the American way of life is like in the area they visited. But to know what it is to be an American, you have to have been born here and traveled quite a bit around the states.

They don't though, that's for sure. My husband is from England and whenever any of his family come over, they've got all these preconceived notions, then don't want to leave when the time comes, they love it here so much.

They all come back all the time, because they love it here, but like my father-in-law, he thought he hated America and Americans....now he wants to move here.

you know, in a lot of other countries, the media, music, TV, movies, is absolutely saturated with American products. So honestly they probably have a pretty good idea.
