I know that this may sound strange, but if you live some where that you are able to dry your clothes outside, the sun and the grass have natural bleaching power. Wash your garment as you normally would, either by hand or in the washing machine and lay then on the grass in the sun until dry or nearly dry. I am not sure exactly how this process works, but some how the sun activates the chloroform in the grass, or something like that and gets the whites whiter w/out the use of bleach.

YES! First off, stop using bleach! Bleach tends to yellow white clothing more, I use bleach to disinfect sheets, towels ONLY. Sometimes you can use a tiny amount to spot clean but thats it.
HERE is the secret, fill your washer with your water and your clothing, add 4 Tbls of Lemon Juice, 4 Tbls. Baking Soda, add your regular detergent and let this mix together and soak for as long as you want.
You will see immediate results and it saves the integrity of the fabric.
Dry as normal.

I have used dish washer detergent for years. I buy stuff at the Salvation Army with stains. Soak for a few hours in dish washer detergent and poof, the stains are gone. Fill you machine with warm water, disolve the detergent, add your clothes and agitate for a few seconds. Turn the machine off and let the stuff soak. Turn the machine back on and finish. By the way, I buy the cheapest I can for this purpose.

Lemon juice works really well, too. White vinegar is supposed to be another way whiten clothes. Sunlight is definitely the best, though.
