What type of juvenile snake is solid brown on top and has a white underneath? It is non-venomous (can tell by split scales on underneath tail end and shape of head)... and maybe 5 inches long. It was found in the Low Country of South Carolina while raking a yard... Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

It is definitely not a garter snake... they typically have a striped patter. At first I thought it may be a black or grey rat snake..but the juveniles have a marked pattern.

This snake is solid brown on top... which makes me think it's a queen snake...but they typically aren't found near the coast.

It sounds like an earth snake:

or a worm snake

or a juvenile brown snake

I would bet that it is one of those three..
but if it isn't, check out this site and I'm sure it will be on here:

If it's a queen snake, there will be a distinct pattern underneath - a double dashed line down the middle of the stomach (=====). See if these photos help: http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/snakes/scsnake.htm

Hmm, I would guess a black or grey rat snake.

A baby garter would have had a strip on its back.
