It is safe indeed. I'm here in Digos City, on the western side of Davao City.
Panabo City is just an hour vehicle ride from Davao City. Both are wonderful places. It is orderly and safe. I used to visit my sister who is based in Panabo City.
No worry at all. Welcome!

Panabo and Davao City are basically safe places to go. I find Davao more disciplined and friendly than Cagayan de Oro City.

Davao City is the biggest city in Philippines in terms of land area and is basically the most important city in Mindanao. It is Mindanao's top tourist destination and a progressive city. However it borders troubled provinces/areas in Mindanao and could sometimes be a problem. After some consideration I no longer recommend tourists especially foreigners to venture beyond Davao Province (west of Davao Province). Panabo is still within Davao Province. There is an incoming Philippine elections this May 2007 and sometimes it could get a bit chaotic as politicians try to "desperately" win the election.

Try checking out http://www.mindanao.com It is a website managed by an American who has travelled Mindanao since 1990 and now lives in Davao (not sure if in Davao) with his Filipina wife and children.

Mindanao is actually a very safe place to go, despite what you hear on the news. The "terrorists" are generally confined to the small islands in the far southwest of Mindanao.... Jolo Island and Basilan Island, and the area near there..
I have been to Davao City and Koronadal and many other cities there... i feel safer there than my own city in the USA... The filipinos are the nicest people you will ever meet..

Because they've never been there, and they base their fear on what they read and watch in the media. These may be the same people who think East Los Angeles is a war zone infested by brutal ganglords and there is fresh blood on every sidewalk every day, just because they watched a drive-by shooting in the 6 o'clock news last Wednesday. Of course there are a few spots where there is danger, but these are the exception. You know where they are, don't go there. I've been to places like Midsayap and Valencia, and didn't feel any threat staying there or traveling along the way. It's even safer in the big cities. Simply put, Mindanao is beautiful.
