I have a newborn who is a week and three days old and she breast feeds and drinks Enfamil with Iron formula. Every now and then when she's a sleep she wakes up, gets real tense, and cries for about 5 mins at a time, and the cry is like a "i have to poop" cry. Her stool is very soft, and I don't understand. could she have a lot of gas from both kinds of milk, or getting stomach aches from it? should i stop breastfeeding?(she only breast feeds when she doesn't want the bottle and I pump and give it too her when I can fill at least 3 oz worth)

is there anything i can do to help soothe her? this is my first kid and i'm really new to all of this.

My son did the same kind of thing sometimes and i asked a nurse about it. You have to think of it like this: they're newborn and aren't used to using those muscles yet, so when they do use them it's hard to and babies cry when they get frustrated. Also, it's kind of hard to poop when you're lying down!

So long as her poop is soft and she's going, she's ok. If you think it could be gas, try Mylicon drops. Sometimes those don't work for my son, so what i do when the drops don't work is i lay him on his back and move his legs up and down to get his intestines moving, which helps move the gas out. Then when it looks like he's pushing i push his legs up close to his tummy. It seems to help him a lot.

If you can, breastfeed exclusively as it's easier for their little tummies to digest, but if you can't then try to give her as much as you can. I tried pumping and supplementing with formula and the breast pump just couldn't get anything out, so i went to formula exclusively. If you have to or want to, don't feel guilty. Babies do just fine on formula.

Hope this helps!

You should try to breastfeed as much as you can, it's the healthiest. Any breastmilk a baby gets is better for development.

Also, make sure you burp her about every ounce at her age, or at least once halfway through the feeding and once again at the end. If gas is causing some of the pain, then frequent burping can help.

That being said, when the baby is giving you the "I'm gonna poop" cry, you can help by gently placing her on her back, and then slowly and gently moving her legs in a bicycling motion (like the baby is peddling the bike). This technique is suggested by doctors and it really helped with my baby girl (I used it up until about 3 months).

By the way, it can be the soft stuff that's difficult to get out! So, it may be that she's struggling to get it to come out. Her little muscles aren't well-developed yet and she's still learning how to get her body to do the things it needs to. A little help from you by using the technique above should help a lot.

Good luck!

My 3 week old son does the same thing, very frequently. It's so hard because they look like they are in so much pain!! Everyone I've asked said that they are just getting used to eating/digesting food, since they are so new to all of it. If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and they can give you advice. Good luck! I wouldn't worry too much:)
