Eh, it depends on the fish species, the fish itself, the tank size, how many fish there are etc.
Angelfish, for example, everyone seems to classify them as semi-aggressive, but I have them in a tank with tetras, kribensis, glass catfish, corydoras, and everyone is fine.
You can usually get away with it if you have enough room (balas are big fish and need a minimum of 100 gallons for a school of 2-4 of them, so add whatever you need to on top of that for any other fish), enough hiding areas like caves and plants, and enough of the underdog fish so that one does not get picked on.
And of course, have a backup plan in case it just doesnt' work out.

Sure, but you will need to be sure you are providing enough hiding places and plenty of room in the tank. In this case it wouldn't be so hard because the balas can stay away from the redfins pretty easily if they have room. The two you are talking about would need LOTS of room! The balas can get over a foot long and the Red finned sharks can get to about 6" so that's lots and lots of fish. I would suggest about a 125 gallon tank for those 4 guys and lots of hiding places / rocks etc for the Red fins to make territories.

When they grow up, your red fin sharks will fight with each other. They prefer large groups or to be the only one of their species. Two is no good. The balas will get large and need a 125 gallon tank at full size. They should be fine with the red fins.

Yes, you can mix SOME peaceful fish with semi-aggressive fish, but you have to do it carefully. With sharks, you should just avoid bettas, cichlids, oscars, and goldfish, and be careful if you mix them with anything long-finned or shark-shaped, especially if your tank is overstocked, which it might be. Sharks get much bigger than what they look like at the store. In fact, I'd be more worried about the sharks fighting with each other than I would be about other tankmates. They should be fine though with tetras, platies, mollies, rasboras, danios, gouramis, angelfish, etc.

It relies upon what the semi aggressive breeds are. some puppy shops i flow into have bala sharks listed as semi aggressive fish and they are via no skill even close. ( except they're grown and then per chance ought to devour smaller fish) you ought to do best to search for / study about the fish you opt on. inspect their temperment, residing conditons and nature on your human being extremely than pay interest to puppy save people. then you definately a thanks to compare fish and preserve them on your human being, its extremely not that onerous. a higher tank is a ought to regardless of the reality that in case you intend to have better fish. 16 gallons is like you residing in a shed as your position. this will also help contained in the coolest thing about care because fights and massive water condition changes should be a lot less probably to take position.

Well, depends on size of fish. I have 3 small angels that school together for protection, 1 baby firemouth ciclid, 1 brichardi ciclid and 2 large gourami's, a blue and pearl. The blue gourami keeps the firemouth in check. They all get along but I have lots of plants for hideout and a couple of hollow logs so no one gets threatened. Each keeps to their own territory.

you shouldnt risk it, semi-aggressive fish will most likely hurt, or even kill the none-aggressive fish. Listen to the guy at the store, hes right.
