I just spent 2 hours waiting on line at SS office to get a replacement card to be turned away. I need the card to get a license and a license to get the card. Birth certificate - no good unless it is an original hospital record created at the time of birth. I do not have a passport, adoption papers (wasn't adopted) baptism (jewish) . What else has an official stamp with my name and Date of Birth. This is unbelievable.

A sworn notarized statement from your mother can also be used. A certified birth certificate from the county where you were born can be obtained after the fact. Sometimes school records will be accepted. Then there are always US census records.

Does your state offer a non-drivers id card at the DMV? It's a pain, but usually you can get that with just your birth certificate if I remember correctly and maybe some mail/bills (proof of address) or a library card or work/student id. Then you will have 2 forms of id and one with a picture on it.
I have run into problems with states other than the one I was born in acknowledging and accepting my birth certificate. I was once told that it was not valid, as it was not from the US (apparently there aren't 50 states?) had no seal (it did) and looked different than a "regular" birth cert from that state( Um, maybe because it was from a different state?) Basically, the person behind the desk was a moron, as she refused to accept a birth certificate (that said BIRTH CERTIFICATE in big letters on it) just because it was from a different state than hers. You just have to find someone who will do their job and help you.

Funny, when I tried to use my original hospital birth certificate created at the time of birth, it was no good. I needed a birth certificate issued by the State of Florida.
I just can't believe, however, that you could go that far thru life and have no valid proof of birth. And I know of no one who won't take a valid birth certificate issued by the state.

That is not true, if you get an official birth certificate from your county courthouse, that is accepted at any social security office, you met with a person who was being a creep. That is all it takes. What was their problem? Can you go to a smaller town to a ss office?

You've gotten some good answers already, but you can also use immunization records from your childhood that were used to prove your eligibility to attend school.
