Can't talk on a cell phone while driving?

Well, wearing seat belts does save lives, but it is hypocritical, as it should be a choice since the government doesn't ban cigarettes or alcohol, which can lead to death, and not all states have helmet laws for motorcyclists, yet it is a law in most states that children wear helmets when riding bicycles.

As for cell phones, I agree with that law as people using cell phones and text messaging are dangerous to other drivers and pedestrians as their attention is diverted from driving and there have been several accidents due to cell phone use by drivers and some accidents involving fatalities.

In my area, they have also banned TVs for the driver!

Commonsense no longer exists in this country.

Land of the free doesn't mean free to harm yourself or others. You must obey laws. If you cause an accident while talking on the phone you are taking others freedom away don't you think? And if you get hurt and end up in a hospital because you had no seat belt on, you can get a huge ticket and if you had no medical insurance, the tax payers are paying for your care, so whats free about your not wearing your seat belt.

The rule is not so much for you as it is for your kids. If you want to be an idiot and ride with no seltbelt, it's illegal, but it's up to you. If you want to jump in front of a train, that's also illegal, but you can do it if you want to.

However, any children under your care are not old enough to know how stupid it is to drive with no seatbelt. If you aren't smart enough to buckle your kids up, then the government is doing the thinking for you by making it a crime to not wear seatbelts.

If you don't like our seatbelt laws, leave the country. We'll all be safer without you No-SeatBelt, talking-on-the-cell-phone, kids-standing-up-in-the-back-seat drivers anyways.

You would not ask such questions were you more informed and experienced. Until you have served on an ambulance crew and perhaps have had to extricate the pieces of a dead baby from underneath a car dash you cannot relate properly. Until you have viewed the crushed and bloody corpse of one who has been ejected from his mangled vehicle, only to have that same vehicle run over him, you cannot relate. Is it fair that we ask emergency personnel to just "suck it up" and pick up our carnage without expecting some repercussions? Seat belts are not a perfect solution, but they do save lives, as do motorcycle helmets.
So, why should the government get involved in passing laws to force safety measures? To try to do something, at least, to prevent suffering and to ease the costs that are passed on to society in general; that is the reason. We should not encourage government to have to take such measures. We do so when the public accepts no personal responsibility to handle an issue on the local level.

I don't like this overly paternalistic aspect of our government either. But I think their case is that a lot of state money goes to health care, and wearing our seatbelts and reducing distractions, ie. cell phones, will decrease injuries in accidents and accidents in general.

Think about it this way. Some illegal immigrant is out drunk driving and T-bones you at a 4-way. He will now get free health care paid for by your tax dollars. Would you rather he is seatbelted, or not?

You are right, no one in the world is truly free. A lot of people say it is because you are not allowed to harm yourself or others but why for example is someone not free to walk down the street naked.

Because when you crash your car because you are talking on your cell phone instead of paying attention while driving, I don't want you flying through your windshield and injuring me with your big fat head. The U.S. Constitution does NOT give you the right to f*ck with the safety or wellbeing of other people.

Because you're not free to do something that endangers the life or freedom of others.
