That's pretty cold weather but, if the kids dress properly and don't have to walk too far, they should go to school.

It depends on where you live. In some areas, -20 windchill is like DEATH, but in others (like here) -20 windchill is nothing. It depends on the actual air temp, too. Is it really cold with a little wind or very very cold with almost no wind? It's all relative.

Yesterday the air temp (before the wind) was -16 here and we had school. Since my kids didn't have to walk more than a block and didn't have to stand outside for a bus that might not come, they went to school (as did almost everyone else).

Here's the simple answer: IT DEPENDS. Do the children attend a school where you have to walk outdoors between buildings to get to class or to lockers or the lunchroom? Do the children have to walk to school because busses or other transportation isn't available? If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, the children should not have to go to school. The big concern is the safety and well-being of the children. Any time a student is exposed to unnecessary risk, such as having to walk outdoors between buildings or having to stand out in the wind waiting for the bus or anything like that, the risk is too great and the children should be allowed to stay home.

Sure, unless they have their classes outside. Dress the children warmly, limit the amount of time they spend outside - but the bulk of the day is inside, in what I hope is a nice warm school.

In many parts of the world, children carry their desk and bench to school each day - they will walk literally miles each way - they endure great hardships for the privilege of going to school.

Here we complain when the weather gets cold or the bus runs late or there aren't enough choices in the cafeteria.

As long as the school is warm enough, and if it is not then if enough parents called the school it would be cancelled. But, otherwise there is no reason kids should get out of school if it is cold (outside). And as long as there is nothing wrong with transportation.

Where I live they have had off Monday and Tuesday cause of the weather. My boss was nice about it yesterday and paid me for the whole day, but today he had a meeting so I had to bring them to work with me...so stressful! Anyway, I hope they are back to school tomorrow!

YES! The only reason they should stay home, is if transportation is not safe. There are kids that go to school in that kind of weather every winter.

Uh, yeah they should have to go to school. Most of them are bussed now anyway and there's heat on the bus, right? If a kid is so "unfortunate" as to have to walk I would say if it's more than a 10 miute walk, no they shouldn't have to go. We did it, why can't they?

I think so. Mine go unless it gets below -40 or the roads are too bad for the buses to be running. Just bundle them up and send them off. Have some hot chocolate ready for them when they get home. ;>)

If they have to walk to school, no. If they are dropped off why not. The school won't make them go outside for recess when the conditions are too bad.
