Because they're using and abusing Christianity to try to appeal to a gullible and malleable power base.

Throughout the history of the world, religion has been used as a driving force of subjugation more than a force for empowerment.

Put another way, given a mechanism for blind belief that rewards those who walk in lockstep with the leadership of that belief system (regardless of what that leadership does or says), people become very open to manipulation.

Edit: Come on people! The right-wing responders to this question are proving my point too readily!

You mean you honestly can't see *anything* in the current right-wing platform that Jesus just might disagree with? Wow...

Well, don't forget that the Bible is one of the most racist, sexist, genocidal books ever written. There are passages which have been used throughout history to justify slavery, murder and all sorts of unpleasant things.

The biggest problem with Christians (and humanity as a whole) is they so rarely hold themselves up to the same moral standards to which they hold others. The most dangerous notion in Christianity is that no matter how grievous your sin, all you have to do is tell God "I'm sorry," and VOILA - you're forgiven.

I honestly mean no disrespect to individual Christians, but most religious institutions are intellectually and morally bankrupt.

Throughout history, Christians in all their respective denominations, have systematically retarded science, subjected women to second-class status, enslaved entire populations, burned, hanged and tortured non-believers and most recently, shielded child molesting priests from the law.

One would think that such a shameful history would give modern Christians pause. Of course it doesn't because those who have the false certainty of FAITH have the anti-intellectual freedom to excuse any travesty, no matter how abhorrent.

And just to be fair, right wing Republicans hardly have a monopoly on hypocrisy.

Anyone who really cares about doing "god's work" should be out feeding the hungry, teaching illiterates how to read, aiding the poor and fighting for socio-economic justice ... not wasting time trying to interpret a book which is largely a work of mythology.

I even have examine those chapters in Matthew additionally, and observe Jesus' status on those subjects. i don't be attentive to the place you get the thought each and one and all superb wingers continually leap out and say . . . Why do no longer human beings such as you observe that Christians are no longer each and all the comparable? answer on your question is that Christians have not got a center concept against Christ's ideals, to the different! Why do no longer you already know that there are Christians every day giving their lives for others in this worldwide, whether or no longer they are heros in our united states of america appearing above and previous their accountability, and others are in foreign places international locations showing like to the unloved and unlucky with little to no reimbursement for his or her acts. think of previous your general sphere of information and you gets it!

For the same reasons that most people who claim to be Christians claim to be Christian. They buy into the false doctrine of "faith alone" and ignore the passages of scripture that talk about not merely believing in Jesus but in following him. A short list below, but consider as a source text the parable of the sheep and the goats. The difference between the saved and the lost had nothing to do with what they believed in the abstract, but in how they lived out their beliefs, in what they did and didn't DO.

Surely we are not saved by our works, but we can be lost by them.

Really? God's word says that if you live by the sword you'll die by it. It also says that if you spare the rod you spoil the child. If a man doesn't work he doesn't eat.... I'd like to know what you're talking about. Back in Jesus' day they stoned people as punishment. You Liberals are all for killing innocent, unborn children, and God says that he knew the number of hairs on our head at conception. Get your facts straight before you get on here like a clueless nit spewing unfounded, random babble.

The whole thing is based on a lie and the mythology of some illiterate quasi-historic semi-nomadic Semitic goat herders who lived more than 2000 years ago and who actually had to appeal to their God for a ruling on whether or not is was OK for them to keep having sex with their sheep.

It is unreasonable to expect honesty or truthfulness from people like that.

They say the person who is the most wrong argues the loudest, I guess that might be it or just that they have disregarded Jesus whole life's message but picked and hanged on to those few sentences in the bible which promote hate. Take everything Jesus did and said and he would be classed as a liberal, I guess we have an answer for all the Reagan Conservatives, we are Christ Liberals.

Many conservative Republicans who profess Christianity bash liberals in a spirit completely contrary to what Jesus taught. Example, there was a question yesterday where some of these types of republicans compared Chelsea Clinton to a dog. Not a very Christian attitude.

This right-wing "Christian" element in US society is not--and for some time has not been, Christian in anything but name. They abandoned the teachings of Christ for a political ideeology and agenda years ago--but keep calling themselves Christian in an attempt to give themselves moral credibility. Which actually fooled a lot of people for a while,, though few are taken in by it any longer.
