It is expensive and not selling as much as Sony execs wished it were. But when the games begin to come to the PS3, people will flock to it. The Wii is going to have to release a new console when people grow tired of it's graphics. The lifespan of the ps3 has 2-3 times the potential of the Wii.

Short answer....No

The PS3 is not a technical failure. It can, however, be considered to be a marketing failure at this point in time, which have greatly dulled its technological advantage.

In this fast-moving world, technological superiority does not last a long time. Sony's state goal to have the PS3 be a platform for 10 years may be what they're working towards, but the PS3 will only be markedly superior (ie. technically cool) for the first 2-3 years of that, max. The marketing-driven delays (the most prominent of which is the Blu-Ray drive) have taken the first year of its life, and more importantly, reduced that 2-3 years of technological superiority to 1-2 years. The subpar launch and consumer indifference will likely take another 6-12 months off. This means that consumers will be asked to pay about $300 for 6-12 months of technical superiority, during which the number of games they can realistically expect to enjoy is minimal.

The PS3 needed to be first to market, or a very close second. It was basically third. (Wii was out three days after PS3 in the U.S., but PS3 is still unavailable in Europe.) I think Sony has quite a challenge in front of it.

Long and short, no.
It's not selling like Sony would have liked, but that's not really a bad thing. Initial release unit cost is estimated to be $840 US, so Sony is loosing $240 on every one they sell (anyone notice the scarcity of 20G PS3s out there? They are only slightly less to build but sell for $100 less). They figure out ways to cut cost everyday so a slow start could help them, but Sony has some pretty deep pockets. There biggest investment is actually in the blu-ray movie format. Sony in general, not just SCEA, has a lot invested in it and they really need it to win out over HD-DVD. They really banked on the PS3 to pump up BD sales.

Well from a business stand point it is. Sony isn't turning a profit yet and won't be for a long while (if ever). Of course the the original X-Box failed miserably too and Microsoft bounced back with the 360.

I say give it another year before you write it off. I'm waiting until the price goes down, myself.
