I've just started Lisey's Story and I am not sure at all. It's the only one of his books that I cannot get into. Like many others I recommend you start with one of his books like Skeleton Crew or Half Past Midnight with the short stories in. I loved The Langoliers (they made it into a really bad film) but the story spooked the living daylights out of me. I think one of the best ones I have read is definately The Stand. A complete classic. But if you want something different look for The Talisman that was written by Peter Straub and Steven King. It's more along the lines of the Dark Tower but more interesting.

I have read several steven king novels. My all time favorite it Misery ( which I recommend ) to anyone. The Dark Tower is a series of seven books by Stephen King that tells the tale of lead character Roland Deschain's quest for the "Dark Tower." The Dark Tower is often described in the novels as a real structure, and also as a metaphor. Part of Roland's fictional quest lies in discovering the true nature of the Tower. The series incorporates themes from multiple genres, including fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror, and western elements. King has described the series as his magnum opus; beside the seven novels that comprise the series proper, many of his other books are related to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses.

The Dark Tower series is fantastic, but quite heavy going unless you are both a Fantasy fan and a Stephen King fan.
I love him as an author, but some of his books are quite gory, and not to everyone's taste. Of all the books I have read of his, The Stand is exceptional. I actually stayed up all night to finish it, as I couldn't bear to put it down.
Try one of his shorter one's first, such as The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or The Green Mile. If you like that then move on to The Stand. If that grips you, then go for the Dark Tower series - it has the best ending of any fantasy series I've ever read. Brilliant!

The Dark Tower series is fantastic, some of the best reading I have done. However, it is not quite what he normally writes. Some good books to start with would be Cujo, It, The Stand, From a Buick 8, and any of his collections of short stories.

unsure about Dark Tower Series.
If you like the supernatural Stephen King i would tend to go with something like IT - scared me sooooo much!!
But if you like the clever horror i would go with Misery or Needful Things - man i loved that book.
If you wanna try something with short stories try Night Shift.
And finally Stephen King wrote a series of shortish stories which are in a book called Different Seasons - these include Apt Pupil, Shawshank Redemption and The Body aka Stand by Me. This book is amazing - i'm a big film fan...but you cant beat the books!!

The Dark Tower series started out ok but I gave up on it after the fourth book... it just seemed to ramble on too much.
How to pick a Stephen King favorite???
The Stand was very good. Also I just read Cell and that was excellent.

Cell just came out. It's messed up (in a good, original kind of way). I've never read The Dark Tower series.

Try starting with Geralds Game, or The Stand, both are excellent books.
Don't know about the Dark Tower series, haven't read them.

I love steven king books! The first one I read was Carrie.
The Stand my favourate but is a bit heavy going for a first read. I also liked It.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes is good as it is a lot of short stories and a good book to get used to his style of writing.
Enjoy!!!
