I believe that all former Presidents and their immediate family are entitled to secret service protection.
I also have to confirm what Sarge below is saying. The secret service and White house staff do not like her at all, she really looks down her nose at them and would not let Chelsea be friendly toward them. Chelsea would ignore them when her mom was around but be really nice and friendly when her mom wasn't. I got this from somebody pretty high up in the military and confirmed by a Democratic lobbyist I know. That's the word around town anyway. Oh yeah and bartenders in the D.C. area really don't like Ted Kennedy, he is a really nasty drunk I hear.

All ex-presidents are entitled to Secret Service protection for life. In addition, all presidential candidates are also entitled to it... She's going to need it. There are so many out here who can't stand the idea of a woman president, I really believe her life is in danger. And-they don't like her because she is a "take no prisoners" woman who is strong, brilliant and speaks her mind. She makes a lot of men feel inadequate, poor things.... I hope she has lots of Secret Service bruisers around her....I also hope she becomes the next president..she will be a good one!
