Using the shampoo "Long Hair", by Mark Anthony does help. Also do not go to a hairdresser. They will only cut off way more than is needed. Get somebody you know to just trim your hair about once a month, or once every two months. You spilt ends need to be cut in order for more growth to happen.

As far as split ends. It's true that your hair grows from the roots, but it is also true that having spilt ends is like having a lawn mower rest at the end of your hair and continuely chew it off. Split ends cause your hair to break off faster, so that no matter how much the root of your hair is growing, it won't look any longer because the bottom of your hair is being split off. Getting your hair trimed with prevent this make your hair look longer.

I used it when trying to grow long hair. My hair used to be well below my waist. It used to get caught in everything from car doors to the belt of my pants. When I was trying to grow it out, I learned that these things work.
