As long as you're voice has changed you can lift weights. 17 seems to be a little old for any stage of puberty. In my family masculine puberty starts between the ages of 11 and 13.

The answer is yes if you are happy with your current height.
During teenage (and up to 21) years the body is surging with testosterone and growth hormone which the body uses for growth (amongst other things). When muscle fibres are broken (after a weight lifting session) your body uses some of these hormones to help build them back up even bigger and stronger.
Not that if you lift weights you won't grow at all, but it would have AN affect on your growth, even if it were mild.
Many (actually..quite alot!) people have started at your age and even younger. I am 17 myself and started weight lifting when I was 16. It is fine to start at your age, but take into account what I have said.
Good luck!

I don't see why you shouldn't start. Be gentle at first and ideally go to a class where you can get professional advise. Also ensure that you do some CV to improve your general fitness, it will make the weight lifting easier.
