Guardian Lions aka Foo Dogs are believe to ward off evil and misfortune. Larger version of these lions can be seen outside temple doors, and in many Chinese establishments. The best place to put these guardian lion is outside your door, windows, or on your desk. One on each side.

That's a good question! I own a rather large house in La Jolla, California and down by the entrance to the estate are two very large lion statues, each sitting on the side of the entrance, and whenever I have visitors, they always comment to me about the size of these lions at the front gate, and I tell them that they came with the place when I bought it back in the 1970's. Maybe they are there to ward off evil spirits cause I sure don't see any. Do you?

I am guessing you are not from S. Ontario. The Italians love statues. If you see a lion dollars to doughnuts an Italian person lives there! My (Italian) friend bought in an Italian area and guess what she backed her car into one night. Now they only have one lion keeping watch.

From what I've seen? Mostly suburbanites with delusions of grandeur.
I've often thought, though, it could be some kind of allergic reaction to garden gnomes and angels (or other lawn kitsch) in the neighborhood. Maybe they harbour a secret fantasy that the lion with come to life and devour the offending kitsch? You just never know...

People who follow feng shui, which is the ancient Chinese practice of placement of space to achieve harmony. The lion statues are supposed to offer protection.

I've seen them in front of places I'd consider to be in the "trailer park trash" variety. So I don't know if that's a cultural thing or just some peoples' idea of classy decorating.
