It could be several things. Some women have breakthrough bleeding with some kinds of contraceptives. If you aren't pregnant and aren't on contraceptives and are over 30 or so, breakthrough bleeding could be a sign of something serious. It's definitely worth getting checked by a doctor. A 38 year old friend had breakthrough bleeding, and it turned out to be ovarian cancer. I'm not saying it's cancer, but you need to find out the cause.
