Until a baby is about 6 months old, all of her nutrition comes from formula and/or breast milk. When introducing solids before 6 months, this is for supplementation and not substitution of the formula/breast milk. Give your baby her usual bottle or nursing and offer a small amount of rice cereal after wards. She only needs a tablespoon or two to being with. Slowly increase the amount you give her. She only needs supplemental feeding once a day at first. When she is eating rice cereal well, then you can introduce pureed vegetables, beginning with veggies such as green beans, sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots. Introduce only one new food every few days to watch for any food sensitivities which may manifest itself by causing a rash, excess gas, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. A food sensitivity is not the same as an allergy so wait a month or so and try the food again. Most babies outgrow these food sensitivities. About 9 months old is when your baby will probably be eating a more "normal" diet such as cereal and fruit for breakfast with 2 veggies or a veggie and a fruit for lunch and dinner. About 9 months most babies are ready for some pureed meat and can eat many table foods as long as they are cut into small enough piece or are mashed up. For your baby at 5 months, stick with once a day for a month or so then go to twice a day. All babies are different and these are some general guidelines.

1-2 times per day. My son is 5 months old right now. He usually lets me know when he is done by turning his head away from the food or fussing. He takes between 5-15 spoonfuls (a lot of it comes right back out - the physical part of eating is quite a learning process for them). Start with the cereal, and then gradually introduce the fruits and veggies (but keep giving cereal - it has more nutrients). Don't introduce more than 1 new food at a time - space new foods out by a couple of days. This way you will know which food caused an allergy should your baby develop one. Good luck!
