ADVANTAGES:
1. It is a good conductor of heat.
2. It has low specific hest capacity.
3. It has uniform expansion.
4. It is opaque n shining.
5. It does not stick to glass-sides.
6. It has a high b.p. of 357 degree C.
7. It is easily available in pure state.
8. It exerts low vapour pressure.
DISADVANTAGES:
1. Its expansion for 1 degree C rise in temp. is not very large n hence small changes in the temp. cannot be accurately measured.
2. It freezes below -39 degree C n cannot be used in very cold regions like Antarctic or the Arctic.
Good day.

Well, it used to be the only reliable way of checking a person's temperature but NO MORE. Most doctors don't recommend using this kind of thermometer because if the glass breaks, the mercury is toxic to humans. The best bet is to get a digital one.

If it breaks you got a problem since mercury is volatile and hard to clean up. This website has pretty clear explanation of the adv and dis of mercury. http://www-das.uwyo.edu/~geerts/cwx/notes/chap03/thermometer.html

It doesn't freeze or boil. Maintains integrity in extreme temperatures. Does not separate. Oh, and it works in Fahrenheit and Centigrade... (no, not blonde- attempt at humor...)
