D-Day was the beginning of the British and Allied invasion of Western Europe during the Second World War and marked the beginning of the campaign for victory in Europe.
In 1944, the course of the Second World War was turning in favour of the Allies. Now it was decided to make a decisive thrust for victory. The planned invasion, the largest invasion in history, consisted of 1,200 fighting ships, 10,000 planes, 4,126 landing craft, 804 transport ships, and hundreds of amphibious and other special purpose tanks. An amphibious landing in Northern France would be followed by a sweep eastwards towards the German capital.
The invasion did not run entirely on schedule. The attack had to be postponed for 24 hour due to stormy conditions. After the weather had settled, the Allies landed successfully in Normandy and the combined forces of the R.A.F. and American Air Force knocked out key enemy installations. But due to paralysing congestion on the beaches and robust resistance by the Panzar divisions, the Allies failed to take the town of Caen as anticipated. A month of heavy fighting followed before Caen was secured and the Allies were able to press on to Berlin and eventually secure victory.
The term D-Day was military parlance for the day on which a combined attack was to take place when the date had not yet been determined or when secrecy was essential. June 6th became immortalised as D-day and successive operations could not be given that term. The invasion of Okinawa began on L-Day and the proposed invasion of Japan would have begun on X-Day had the Japanese not previously surrendered.

American, British, and Canadian infantry troops launched an invasion from the english channel to invade Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. The beaches which were invaded where code-named Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Also American and British paratroopers landed the night before the initial sea invasion to complete several different tasks. Weaken German defenses, capture bridges, and important villages. Also Naval ships from several Allied countries supported the invasion with beach bombardments. And American and British bombers were in support of the troops throughout the invasion. And Irish people just sat around hiding behind Great Britain.

on june 6, 1944 the largest landing force inthe war gathered off the coast of Normandy, France. the night before, the 101st and the 82nd ariborne units and many other glider units set off to land behind enemy lines to link up and distract the german army with the help of the french underground.
on the morning of june 6, 5 landing elements made their way to their respective beach heads, Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha, and Utah. led by general dwight d eisenhour, supreme commander of allied forces, the forces that stormed the beaches catpured a foothold in less than twelve hours. although the cost of the operation was as stagering as a couple hundred casualties, it was an enormous success.
however, it could have ended completely opposite if the german forces had deploid the panzer element held in reserve not to far from the beaches.

The Allies landed on the beaches of rthe French province of Normandy in June 1944. This began the liberation of Europe from German occupation. The Americans landed at beaches called Omaha and Utah. The British beaches were Gold, Juno, and Sword. Those key words can get you started. Also Churchill's "History of the Second World War."

The Anglo-American alliance and its allies landed five divisions (plus the two airborne divisions the night before) on a stretch of Normandy coast to open the Second Front against the German Reich. It was an impressive feat, no doubt, but the USSR was already well underway in the process of cleaning Europe of Hitler and National Socialism.
