I have tried to uninstall xp on an older IDM thinkpad to reinstall 98. I have run the recovery cd and there is an error. It didnt seem to run the full uninstall. Now on start up it goes to a memory test every time. When I bypass it it try's to start up xp again. What do I need to do to get past this and fully uninstall xp?

Insert the Windows 98 CD and reboot the computer. It should send you to the 'blue 98' screen. Delete the partition that has XP on it, create and format a new partition, and install win 98 on that partition.

1)Acquire a Dos Boot Disk with Fdisk.exe on it.
2)Set the BIOS to boot from floppy.
3)Boot to DOS... run Fdisk.exe and remove all partitions.
4)Set BIOS to boot from CD and try again.

The problem may be that there is a bad or mismatched memory chip installed.

If the problem persists and there are multiple memory chips installed the removed the newer one(s)... and try again.

Use the startup disk that came with 98 and re-format the HD. Then re-install any software OS that you'd like to have on that HD.
